On 15 October the Simons Foundation announced a new set of initiatives to help the mathematics community deal with artificial intelligence entering the field. Under the partnership, the Simons Foundation, Anthropic, and OpenAI will commit $15 million in combined funding and resources. The foundation will manage and award the funding, including through an open call for proposals.

The money supports workshops and related initiatives so researchers can evaluate recent AI-assisted results, learn and use new tools, compare views, and shape shared standards for use. The notice does not present the money as grants already paid to named people.
[1]Anthropic and OpenAI will also provide AI tools and computing resources to researchers the Simons Foundation supports. That extends beyond mathematics to basic science. The tools and compute are a further commitment. The notice gives no machine count and no quota.
[1]The foundation says it was an early backer of machine learning for science, including funding the development of the Lean proof assistant, and that this made AI-assisted proofs possible. The notice lists neither awardees nor how much each of the three parties puts in. What can be said now is a combined commitment and an open call, not a set of grants already paid out.
