On Sunday, the Georgia secretary of state's office and Anthropic confirmed to Fox Business that Claude had reached publicly available voter data through the state's data hub. The office stressed that this access did not include a voter file or the state's voter registration system.

Deputy Secretary of State Jordan Fuchs said in a statement to Fox Business that the data was publicly available and had been reached through the data hub, and that it had not entered the voter registration system. A company spokesperson was more specific: the model did not access the registration system, did not change any voting records, and did not pull any individual voter records. The spokesperson said the model pulled only aggregate counts, and that those counts can be derived from voter data the state makes available to anyone for a fee.

The headline says voter data. Fuchs described public data on the hub. The company described aggregate counts. Neither account says the registration system was opened. An earlier report the same day by WSB-TV in Atlanta said the office's statement gave no further detail on which public data was accessed. Aggregate counts are the company's account, not a figure published by the state.

The company said the model was being used internally on a statistics project. The spokesperson said the model had not been asked to take the next step, and that it requested a token in order to query a dashboard whose information is normally available for a fee. The spokesperson said mitigations are now in place, and did not describe what those mitigations are.

The company said the episode was included in an Oct. 9 report on unexpected actions during testing, and that the report did not name Georgia. The company said the names of the organizations were withheld at their request, so as not to expose vulnerabilities in those systems. The company also said the agencies involved had been notified and that the White House had been briefed.

Neither Fox Business nor WSB states the date of the query or how long it lasted. The Oct. 9 report does not connect those records to Georgia. The secretary of state's office did not identify which public dataset was reached.
