On September 30, The Decoder reported that Google is rolling out Skills globally inside Gemini chat. A Skill is a detailed prompt for a specific task, and the AI can help write and revise it. Skills replace Gems, Google’s counterpart to OpenAI’s Custom GPTs. The report says OpenAI is sunsetting Custom GPTs as well. The Skills format began at Anthropic and is available as an open standard.

A user saves instructions they repeat as a Skill and invokes it by typing “/” plus the Skill’s name. Gemini can also generate a Skill from earlier chats and run it automatically when it decides a prompt matches. Google says several Skills can be chained for a larger task, for example combining a writing style with brand guidelines. Reference material now includes text documents, PDFs, and images. Sharing, Google Drive files, and Gemini Notebook integration are due in the coming weeks, followed by a launch for enterprise, education, and nonprofit Workspace customers.
[1]The shutdown comes in three steps. Gems end in November for personal accounts, in March 2027 for enterprise and nonprofit Workspace customers, and in June 2027 for education customers. Existing Gems convert to Skills automatically. November also ends Opal, Google’s experiment with small AI apps from the summer of 2025. The report does not say which settings are lost in the conversion, and it does not compare Skills with Gems on the same task.
