On September 28, 2026, Sarah Perez at TechCrunch reported that Shopify said on Monday that browser-based AI agents can now complete purchases on merchants’ sites, past search and add-to-cart. The report sets this against Amazon, and “Adidas, apparently,” blocking agents from buying. The Adidas clause is hedged, so it is not treated here as a confirmed ban.

Shopify already supported WebMCP on storefronts and carts, so an agent could browse inventory, search, and add items. Checkout, including Shop Pay, is the addition. The company said agents can read the checkout, update it, and submit the transaction after the buyer authorizes it, without screenshots or scraping pages.

The three new tools are get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout. An agent can inspect a checkout, change an address or a delivery option, and place the order after the buyer authorizes it. The feature is rolling out to all eligible Shopify merchants, not to every merchant. Gil Greenberg, a product manager for agentic commerce, said this in a post on X. That post is not linked here.

Shopify also has a hosted MCP server for agents that work server to server. WebMCP is still a proposed standard, for agents inside the buyer’s browser. Both use Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol. The report says Muse and Instinct already have direct agentic-commerce partnerships with Shopify. The Instinct partnership was announced the same day. The terms are not in the article.

Greenberg’s point, as reported, is that an agent in the buyer’s browser should use the WebMCP tools on the storefront and checkout instead of clicking HTML built for people. Those tools are meant to carry accurate commerce facts, required disclosures, and handoff requirements. As the article describes it, complete_checkout does not place the order before the buyer authorizes it.
