What was founded is an alliance, not a released model

IT Home reported on October 12, citing Beijing Daily, that on October 11 the Shing-Tung Yau Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Alliance was founded at Tsinghua University. The report lists four lines of work: large models built for the mathematical sciences, AI-assisted formal proof and conjecture discovery, interpretable artificial intelligence, and intelligent computing across fields.

This is a founding and a set of directions. The report gives no model name, parameter count, audience, or release date.

Yau is talking about the value of mathematics

Yau, who leads the alliance and is dean of Tsinghua's Qiuzhen College, said at the ceremony that this forces a rethink of the essential value of mathematics, and that mathematicians have to surf the AI wave rather than hide from it.

That sentence is his judgment about the state of the field. The report does not turn it into a claim that some particular theorem is now proved.

Of more than ten items, only the seven-dimensional sphere has a division of labor

The alliance released more than ten “AI plus mathematics” results and research directions, covering geometry, quantum computing, and the life sciences. Named problems include a degenerate Arnold conjecture, boundedness under minimal modification, and seven-dimensional homotopy spheres. Of those items, the report spells out how people and tools split the work for only the seven-dimensional homotopy spheres. The other two appear as names.

The work is at the Yau Mathematical Sciences Center at Tsinghua and the Shanghai Institute for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences. The project title in the report stops at the words for positive sectional curvature. This piece does not complete the rest of that title.

The split is this: AI is used to explore proof strategies and simplify computation; computer-algebra systems check exact identities and interval bounds and produce reproducible computation certificates; mathematicians conceive and write the proof, check the results, and finish the argument and the paper.

In this project the model does not replace the proof. It helps search for strategies and makes the computation simpler. The algebra system issues certificates. People write the proof. The report also says AI has offered ideas on other scientific problems and helped with early experimental calculation. It does not list a result for each of those problems.

More than a thousand people; the math model is still a path

Yau said the alliance has gathered more than 1,000 mathematicians and researchers. The institutions named alongside it are Tsinghua's Qiuzhen College, the Yau Mathematical Sciences Center, the Beijing Yanqi Lake Institute of Applied Mathematics, the Morningside Center of Mathematics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Shanghai Institute for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences, the Yau Center at Southeast University, the Hetao Institute of Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences in Shenzhen, and the Zhizhen School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The alliance is to advise younger scholars and students, pool resources, and explore a path for building China's own mathematical large model. A path is something still being explored. This report does not describe a mathematical model that has already been released.
