100%, @paulg. Of course China might be doing the same, and we should freak out about it if we catch them, and we should try to catch them if they are.
But, also, your reply—which a bit like implying that it's fine for everyone on the street to rob banks because somebody else might—dodges the point of my thought experiment.
It would be wrong if China does this, and it's wrong that US companies are doing this.
If they can cut it out, they should, and if they can't they should stop running general-purpose agents until they figure out a fix.
(Which might be very hard, given the underlying nature of the technologies involved).
