My first encounter with classic AI was nearly 40 years ago while working with NASA colleagues using LISP in a decision support software package for the Hubble Space Telescope. The rule-based syntax of LISP was very interesting and efficient, radically different from my years of mathematical scientific programming in FORTRAN, but LISP was ultimately abandoned since it required time-intensive development as new and more complex edge cases for the operational telescope systems regularly emerged. A highly successful O.R. decision support & scheduling system was eventually implemented, which NASA then open-sourced and spun off to other completely different industries. Nevertheless, my first encounter with “early AI” owes a lot to this guy… ⤵️
