When I first learned of this discovery in an undergrad physics class many years ago, I was stunned and marveled at how something so totally theoretical and mathematical as Group Theory—specifically a super math-y thing called the SU3 symmetry group—could so precisely predict the existence and physical properties of a previously unknown particle. It was literally like magic to me.
