G. H. Hardy went to visit Srinivasa Ramanujan, who was ill, in London. Making conversation, Hardy said the taxi he came in had a rather dull number: 1729.
"No," said Ramanujan. "It is a very interesting number. It is the smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways."
1729 = 1³ + 12³ = 9³ + 10³
Hardy told this story himself. Mathematicians still call 1729 the "Hardy–Ramanujan number", and numbers like it "taxicab numbers".
