The European Commission proposed a data-centre rating scheme to publicly grade energy and water efficiency from 2027.
Data centres with at least 500 kW of installed IT power will get electronic labels. It also shows the energy-source mix, cooling conditions, grid flexibility and whether the facility is ready to reuse waste heat.
“The aim of the rating scheme is to increase transparency about the energy use of data centres and to become a resource that will inform better policy making and procurement of more sustainable digital assets and services across Europe.”
The Commission says EU data centres used 68 TWh in 2024 and could reach 114 TWh, or 3.2% of demand, by 2030.
