AI Engineering is a lot more than learning how to prompt a model.
Yesterday, I told the story of a developer who can't use AI at work and is afraid of falling behind, and many people replied, saying that it would take almost no time to learn everything required to become an effective AI Engineer.
I don't think that's the case.
Attached is a skill map for using coding agents. This image was published by @AndrewYNg last week.
We are well past the point where coding with AI is as simple as prompting a model. As we learn how to tame these tools, the work is becoming more and more nuanced, and we are developing patterns and techniques that require time to learn and master.
If you are a professional developer, you will be fine and adapt to the new ways, but it won't be easy. It won't take a week.
I found Andrew's article very good, so I'm linking to it below.
