Same-machine proofs are 10 to 39 times faster

Microsoft Research's Magnetar proves programs written in Rust, Go, or C. On a laptop, across 15 benchmarks, it is 10 to 39 times faster on average than the fastest existing zero-knowledge virtual machines on the same machine. Security rests on a standard hash such as SHA-256 or SHA-3. An agent attaching a compliance proof is a possibility in the post, not a shipped product.

Open 816B weights activate 42B

Meta released the weights for Muse Spark Open. The research post says it has 816B total parameters, 42B active per token, and a 1M-token context, and calls it the most capable US open-weight model to date. That superlative is the company's claim. The developer post adds text, image, video, and audio input, and says the NVFP4 weights are about 530GB.

Six evaluators get employee-like access

Anthropic says six METR employees are inside, with company hardware, office space, and tool access roughly on par with its own risk teams. The company cannot veto publication, but it can require redaction of customer data, privileged legal material, and model architectures. Two other tiers are narrower. SecureBio is still reviewing one chapter of the August risk report, and publication still needs approval.

A 209M forecaster claims three firsts

Mistral released Timestral, a time-series family whose largest model has 209M parameters. It says that model ranks first on GIFT-Eval, TIME, and fev-bench, with about two-thirds the parameters of the previous best. That is their own zero-shot, single-checkpoint evaluation. The results have been submitted to leaderboards, and the technical report is still to come. On an 8-thread CPU, the 209M model forecasts one day in about 140 milliseconds.

A 120B model activates 12B per token

NVIDIA released Nemotron 3.5 Super VL, an open 120B mixture of experts that activates 12B parameters per token. On one GPU it claims up to 5x the throughput of other open models in its size category on agentic tasks, without naming the comparison in that sentence. The 24GB Bolt is downloadable now. The 4GB Bolt is dated October 23. Scale's and Ramp's cost and latency figures are expectations, not a closed bill.

Code layers stay free through November 4

At Config in India, Figma shipped code layers and specs. Its release notes say creating and editing inside a code layer is free on paid plans through November 4, while specs are in open beta on paid plans. Importing code from GitHub or npm is still a closed beta, and bundling design libraries, code libraries, and guidelines into one design system is preview only.

Some interviews add a ten-minute simulated client

The Verge, citing The Wall Street Journal, says McKinsey will have some entry-level candidates spend 10 minutes with a simulated client. The AI does not score them; people in the room do. The fall test covers undergraduate business-analyst roles in some North American offices. The 80 percent figure is the share of daily scenarios the simulation is meant to reflect, not a measured coverage rate.

Marvis reaches the Harmony app market

Tencent communications director Zhang Jun said on October 15 that the personal AI assistant Marvis is on Huawei's Harmony app market. The Harmony build is described as matching the Android and iOS apps, and it adds WeChat and QQ login so chat history and points carry over. There is no accuracy figure and no comparison test.

A new book says heavy AI use can thin thinking

MIT Sloan professor Eric So's book, The Collision: What AI Does to Us, is out this month from W.W. Norton. He argues that heavy reliance leaves thinking skills unpracticed. The news story's account of an Anthropic study says about half of college students' queries asked for a simple answer. His four rules are advice, not a measured treatment effect.

Document parse and extract APIs are generally available

Databricks marks the real-time REST APIs for document parsing, extraction, and classification as generally available. The decisions API, which they describe for routing, is still in beta. Extraction can return citations and confidence scores, and the post gives no accuracy rate. The company says its enterprise customers receive millions of documents a day, which is its own figure.

The preview launcher is a few seconds faster

Ars Technica reports that Epic published a preview of its launcher and says AI was used to rewrite it from scratch. Ars's own try reached the store page a few seconds faster than Steam from a cold start. Epic's claim of a 0.06-second tray restore was not noticeable, including in Ars's test. The preview will have bugs, and social and account tools are not all moved over. The fivefold cold start from June is not this measurement.

A cache the size of the index hits about 95 percent

Databricks measured Lakebase search on an internal slide app and on a public corpus of up to 4 million passages. When the cache is about the size of the vector index, a skewed query mix keeps about 95 to 98 percent of pages in memory. Cutting candidates from 1,000 to 200 keeps 90.5 percent of the top 10. Recall@10 at the default probe count is about 0.75. The load is theirs.

Three-kilometer weather at about one three-hundredth the cost

Ai2 says HiRO-ACEv2 can generate global 3 km climate data at about one three-hundredth the cost of the high-resolution atmospheric model X-SHiELD. Given coarsened X-SHiELD data, high-resolution statistics match within 3%, including events that occur once in a million points. It cannot yet make a warmer future or a historical field such as ERA5.

MIT News says a machine-learning correction on top of an existing forecast doubled accuracy from two to six weeks and placed first in an ECMWF competition. High GPU use still left a sixfold gap

Databricks says fine-tuning Qwen 3.8 27B on one fixed dataset fell from 7 hours 44 minutes to 1 hour 17 minutes, about sixfold. GPU utilization was already 98%, at 9,396 tokens per second. Fused kernels brought it to 2 hours 5 minutes, then packing brought it to 1 hour 17 minutes. They warn that packing can hurt quality, and this post has no quality table.
